Iron Mike

Just so Kingaling isn't the only one contributing to this blog...and because its finals week and what better time to write a nonsensical blog than amidst all the studying and stress...

For those that don't know, I am a huuuuuuuuuuge Mike Tyson fan not only because he was the youngest Heavyweight champion or because he knocked some dude out in like 90 seconds or because I played his video game Mike Tyson's Punch-Out faithfully throughout my adolescence. In fact, I'm probably more interested in Mike Tyson-the human being than Mike Tyson-the athlete. Despite all the controversy and allegations of rape and outright portrayals of him as some kind of monster, I think Mike Tyson is full of compassion and love. He's angry, but how would you feel if you were put in prison at the prime of your life? Here's a man that's so misunderstood and misguided you almost want to cry for him. That song by Nina Simone, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," I think that song's about Mike Tyson. It's perfect. Listen.

Anywho, there's a documentary out there that I'm pretty anxious to see. It's already creating quite a stir after being screened at the Sundance Film Festival. "Tyson" by director James Toback is a candid depiction of the tragic life of Mike Tyson from his early days as a fat kid that raised pigeons that was bullied to his rise and fall from stardom. It comes out on April 24. And eight days from that is the bout between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton (just had to throw that in there. Go Manny!) Sooo much boxing goodness to come! Can't wait!

I wanna start adding to this blog more often. Hopefully I can do that.

Much Love,
Allan

  1. "Soul on Ice" by Eldrige Cleaver (former leader of the Black Panthers) has a lot to say about why black men become rapists after getting out of prison, it's a good read if you're interested :)
