Continuing with the boxing theme from my last post...
I mentioned Manny Pacquiao at the end of my rant about the unfair portrayal of Mike Tyson over the years. I have an incredible amount of adoration for these two fighters and both easily make my list of Top 5 Favorite Athletes of All Time. On a side note, I make a lot of top 5 lists. Maybe I'll hit ya'll with my top five favorite rappers or movies or LA food joints or top five favorite parts on a woman's body in the next blog. Idk.
Enough with the tomfoolery. Manny Pacquiao is the real deal. There's no denying the importance of Pacquiao to the Filipino community. His popularity among the Filipino community and the Filipino community's diehard allegiance to Manny is something special. He means to Filipinos what Beckham means to England, or better yet, the Beatles. There has never been a Filipino that has reached as much success or celebrity status as Manny. Not only is he the pride of my peoples, but also our biggest resource. After every fight, he usually redirects his earnings to helping the impoverished peoples of his hometown in the Philippines. They form lines outside his home and Pacquiao hands out cash and groceries. His close friends say hes generous almost to a fault. But this is the reason why Manny Pacquiao is my hero.
About a week ago, I might've missed the opportunity of a lifetime. Manny Pacquiao came to my hometown Carson for the first ever Filipino Celebrity Basketball Invitational. And by some surreal chance, one of my homies got to play on his team. OMG! Why I decided to stay in Irvine for this weekend, I will never know! I'm pretty jealous, but happy for him. No, my friend isn't a Filipino celebrity, but his uncle played in the PBA (Philippines Basketball Association) and I assume that's how he got invited. I feel like one day I'll meet him because I seem to have the right connects haha. Hopefully, one day.
Much Love,
Allan
